Job Summary

The City of Chesapeake Department of Human Services is seeking a skilled Child Protective Services Specialist to conduct assessments and investigations under the supervision of a Family Services Supervisor. The selected candidate will be responsible for case management duties, including investigating CPS referrals, assessing child safety, and preparing court documents. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a human services field and a minimum of four years of experience in a related area.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct CPS assessments and investigations, utilizing structured decision-making tools, interviews, and observations.
  • Prepare court documents and testify in court hearings.
  • Make sound decisions regarding child safety, including removing children from their home and placing them with relatives or in foster care.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, mental health professionals, and emergency medical services partners.
  • Support a demanding caseload, including investigations and family assessment referrals.
  • Model professional behavior and best practices from the Virginia Services Practice Model.
  • Complete tasks related to Child Protective Services Intake procedures.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field or a related area.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in a related area.
  • Valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City of Chesapeake policies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current experience working for Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) or prior VDSS experience in Child Protective Services (CPS).
  • Experience in Child Welfare.
  • Experience or knowledge of OASIS and/or Peer Place.
  • Experience writing service plans, reports, or other related types of reports.
