Job Summary

Emory University is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to serve as the Assistant Director of Formation Communities. This role will provide leadership and program administration for Candler's Formation Communities program, working closely with faculty, staff, and students to foster growth, engagement, and support within our formation communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the Formation Communities program, including program development, management, and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Worship and Spiritual Formation to develop and offer creative support to the program.
  • Provide technical support by evaluating established processes, conducting training, attending operational meetings, and networking with affiliated groups.
  • Monitor progress toward achieving established objectives and deadlines.
  • Participate in planning, administering, and monitoring program-related budgets.
  • Conduct research, design new initiatives, and collaborate with others to ensure program viability.
  • May serve on, hold office in, or chair committees.
  • May write publishable articles and papers.
  • May supervise staff.
  • Oversee or assist in developing operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure required records and documentation are maintained.
Program Development and Management
  • Administer the annual application process by designing and distributing promotional material, scheduling informational meetings, and working with other Candler offices to distribute information.
  • Coordinate the application review team and lead the student participant selection process.
  • Develop work plans to accomplish program goals and objectives and monitor progress toward their achievement.
  • Develop and refine program activities that support the goals and mission of the Formation Communities program.
  • Implement strategies to enhance engagement and participation among formation community members and the larger community of Candler School of Theology.
  • Develop and coordinate program-related meetings and retreats and manage logistical requirements for such programming.
  • Recruit faculty and others from the wider community to serve as house chaplains.
  • Work closely with house rectors and house chaplains throughout the academic year to ensure the smooth running of the formation communities.
  • Supervise student workers related to the work of the formation communities.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and initiatives, through regular evaluation of the program, and gathering feedback and data to inform future planning and improvements.
Financial Management
  • Maintain the program budget by managing expenditures and the budget planning process and preparing financial reports.
  • Process financial reimbursements and facilitate the hiring and payment of house chaplains and rectors.
  • Prepare operational and statistical reports.
Administrative Coordination
  • Manage the coordination and communication with all formation community rectors, house chaplains, and student participants.
  • Develop promotional materials, newsletters, annual reports, and other written information related to the program.
  • Maintain a program calendar and keep records for program participants.
  • Respond to student inquiries about the program as well as work with Candler's Chief Business Officer to resolve property issues as they emerge.
  • Identify potential properties for possibilities of formation communities' growth.
  • Schedule and facilitate annual cleaning of each house during the summer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to the program(s) and five years of program-related experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Master's degree, preferably in a theological-related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Strong ability to interact with students, staff, and faculty at all levels.
  • Professional experience in student affairs is desirable.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, inspire, and empower others.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to achieve common goals.
  • Wide knowledge of educational policies and procedures.
  • Formal theological training and/or experience with residential intentional community is a plus.
  • Ability to initiate projects and creative proposals as a self-starter who values and seeks collaboration.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and experience with database management software or online platforms for community engagement, as well as file sharing software, such as OneDrive.
  • Familiarity with programs of theological education, the mission of Candler School of Theology, and the church.
