About the Position

The Virginia Department of State Police is seeking a highly skilled Program Support Technician Senior to join our team in the Criminal Justice Information Services Division at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia.

The successful candidate will provide critical support to the Civil and Applicant Records Exchange (CARE) Section by conducting thorough research and analysis of criminal records, preparing written records of research, collecting and reviewing documents, and determining whether specific information conforms to existing legal provisions relative to lawful employment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct background check requests requiring out-of-state research, federal or military agency crimes research, and notify criminal justice agencies in instances of applicant warrants and the Sex Offender Registry (SOR) for applicants with registerable Tier Offenses.
  • Support the CARE Section by determining if applicants have been charged or found guilty of a crime that may prohibit employment around children, the elderly, or disabled in accordance with § of the Code of Virginia.
  • Prepare written records of research, collect and review documents, and determine whether specific information conforms to existing legal provisions relative to lawful employment.
Requirements
  • Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of State and federal laws pertaining to the dissemination of criminal records, barrier crime statutes for employment, and their equivalent.
  • Ability to research and compare and contrast data in interpreting criminal arrest and disposition information.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • VCIN certification, which requires U.S. citizenship or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligibility for naturalization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in retrieval of criminal arrest and disposition information.
  • Experience working in a public safety environment and with sensitive and confidential information.
