Fire and Life Safety Engineer Intern

Amtrak is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Fire and Life Safety Engineer Intern to support the Fire and Life Safety team in the Engineering department. As an intern, you will provide technical, logistical, and administrative support to the Senior Fire & Life Safety staff for the efficient and cost-effective management of Structures/Facilities design and construction projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure all structures/facilities projects are initiated using the department's guidelines and structures/facilities design and construction programs support existing scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Conduct plan examination for both internal and third-party projects that will impact Amtrak infrastructure.
  • Provide life safety and fire protection support to Amtrak Operations.
  • Develop Code and Standard interpretations for the Engineering Structures Group for Fire and Life Safety related issues.
Requirements:
  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • Basic knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.
  • Must become qualified in RWP and AMT2.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2-years experience in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Experience in using Microstation CADD software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Candidate must be in good physical condition and pass a pre-employment physical exam.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior satisfactory job performance.

Amtrak offers a competitive hourly rate of $17.50 - $35.00 per hour, based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. Paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as part of the experience, along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
