About the Role:

The Principal Engineer - Fire Protection Specialist will be responsible for providing expert-level fire protection engineering services to Amtrak's Major Stations, including Philadelphia, New York, Washington, Chicago, Baltimore, and Newark.

The incumbent will have a thorough understanding of fire and life safety design requirements and will serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) for fire protection and life safety with a focus on tunnels, overbuilds, rail platforms, and Major Station structures.

The position will provide service to numerous internal departments, including Stations, Planning, Mechanical, and Transportation, as well as Engineering projects/programs.

The Fire Protection Engineer will be responsible for resolving issues related to fire protection and life safety, utilizing deterministic and performance-based methods, code consulting, and egress analysis, fire protection system design and reviews, fire hazard analysis, and computer-based modeling analysis.

The incumbent will also be responsible for reviewing and collaborating project design with internal staff and external architecture/engineering firms and consultants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure project compliance with Amtrak standards and guidelines and all applicable federal/state/regional regulatory agency requirements.
  • Review, analyze, and report on all project documents, including proposals, reports, schedules, estimates, value engineering proposals, etc.
  • Support construction administration activities, including reviewing field installation, RFIs, and shop drawings, and assisting in punch lists and project closeout activities.
  • Analyze issues, perform research, and develop white papers/reports to communicate design strategies, address project issues, issue directives to consultants, project teams, or stakeholders, etc.
  • Assist in the updating of station and facility design standards via collaboration with other Amtrak stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 7 years professional experience in fire protection engineering, including at least 3 years in the transportation industry and/or complex building.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or equivalent degree or years of experience.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or willingness to obtain within 3 years of hire.
  • Competency of building code, including NFPA 130, other relevant codes and recommended practices for fire protection equipment, controls, power sources, and SCADA.
  • Infrastructure experience in maintenance, planning, design, construction preferably in a railroad environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a matrix organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience/familiarity with building systems beyond Mechanical, including electrical and fire life safety systems.
  • Project Management Institute (PMI), Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Understanding of railroad business functions, operations, and design and construction processes.
  • Previous railroad projects including stations, facilities, and properties.

Work Environment:

60% office, 40% remote and/or travel to Major Stations. Occasional travel to various major stations.

Communications and Interpersonal Skills:

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
