Position Overview

As a Construction Engineer at Kiewit, you will be instrumental in the effective planning, organization, and execution of engineering and project control tasks. District Overview

Kiewit's Southeast District stands as a leader in infrastructure development, focusing on heavy civil, transportation, and water resource sectors. You may engage in projects that involve constructing bridges, airports, mass transit systems, canals, dams, pump stations, or tunnels. While the majority of our operations are based in the southeastern United States, we also undertake various projects along the East Coast.

Responsibilities

Field Engineering:
  • Assist in interpreting technical drawings and specifications for field teams and craft supervision.
  • Conduct quantity calculations through measurements and assess the percentage of completed materials and work.
  • Support the development of work plans and packages.
  • Assist in field surveying and layout support, including elevation and control points.
  • Compile and confirm daily labor timesheets.
  • Help prepare Job Hazard Analysis (JHA's).
  • Participate in job site safety evaluations, toolbox meetings, and safety training sessions.
  • Order and coordinate material deliveries.
  • Plan, schedule, and oversee work groups on-site.
  • Supervise field operations.

Office Engineering:
  • Perform material takeoffs from technical documents and specifications.
  • Conduct basic engineering calculations and technical drafting to support field activities.
  • Assist Engineers in collecting and preparing data for submission to various stakeholders.
  • Participate in preparing purchase orders and managing subcontractor solicitations.
  • Maintain project records and correspondence, including daily reports and requests for information (RFIs).
  • Input data into the job cost system and assist in reviewing cost reports.
  • Help generate change orders and as-built data for Project Manager review.
  • Provide field support and oversee subcontractor operations.

Estimating:
  • Assist in reviewing historical data relevant to projects, incorporating various production rates and costs for bid preparation.
  • Conduct plan and specification reviews for assigned projects, identifying risk areas for the Sr. Estimator.
  • Complete material and quantity takeoffs as per bid documents.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in the construction sector.
  • Familiarity with grading, drainage, paving (asphalt and concrete), bridge construction, and other heavy civil construction activities.
  • Proficient in managing systems such as scheduling - CPM, unit man-hour performance, material control, estimating, and subcontracting.
  • Experience in leadership, management, communication, planning, and organization.

Working Conditions

Regular, reliable attendance is essential. Candidates must be able to work productively and meet deadlines while communicating effectively and professionally with supervisors and team members. Safety and adherence to instructions are paramount. Flexibility to work at various locations and conditions may be required.


Other Requirements:
  • Ability to work during standard operating hours and complete tasks within deadlines.
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends as necessary.
