Family Support Specialist

Under the guidance of the Supervisor, the Family Support Specialist offers parenting assistance, educational resources, and case management for a caseload of up to twenty-five families with young children facing risks of abuse and neglect. Parenting education is delivered through individualized sessions utilizing a home visiting model. The main objective is to foster healthy family dynamics by improving parenting practices to ensure a secure and stable environment for the child or children.

Key Responsibilities include the following: (Additional duties may be assigned.)

The Family Support Specialist must exhibit a comprehensive understanding of parenting challenges and child development; knowledge of community resources; an understanding of family dynamics; the effects of abuse and neglect; substance misuse; mental health issues; poverty; grief and loss; and trauma on children and their families. Responsibilities include:

  • Proactively reach out to and engage new clients promptly.
  • Arrange and maintain appointments with clients, with individualized frequency of contact, ideally seeing clients at least twice a month.
  • Manage a caseload of up to 25 active clients.
  • Collaborate with clients to assess strengths and needs, creating a tailored service plan based on that assessment.
  • Provide case management services focused on connecting clients with necessary community resources.
  • Encourage the participation of other family members in services as appropriate and with client consent.
  • Deliver parenting education using the Nurturing Skills Curriculum and other relevant resources tailored to the client's needs.
  • Evaluate clients' needs for tangible support services, making community referrals as necessary, and accessing agency funds with supervisory approval only after exploring all other options.
  • Coordinate with other service providers to connect clients with essential community resources.
  • Offer crisis intervention services as needed and be available for after-hours emergencies within reasonable limits.
  • Assist in outreach initiatives to promote awareness of services and generate referrals to the program; represent the agency at community events as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate client records, documenting all client-related activities in a timely manner.
  • Complete data entry into the state database in compliance with contract requirements.
  • Engage in regular supervision and seek consultation with the supervisor as needed.
  • Adhere to all confidentiality and security standards mandated by HIPAA, COA, and other external entities, as well as those specified in internal organizational policies.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Participate in agency and departmental events that support the overall function of the agency or program.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to all emails and voice messages.
  • Engage in agency peer record reviews as required.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Participate in training to enhance competencies related to the position and ensure acquisition of all required job-related knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related field is required. Two years of experience in community-based child welfare services or an advanced degree in Social Work or Counseling is preferred.

Language Proficiency: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings to clients and other employees of the organization.

Reasoning Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions. Ability to address problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Additional Requirements: Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a valid driver's license, reliable access to an automobile, and valid automobile insurance. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential; a nonjudgmental attitude; strong assessment skills; ability to work with a culturally diverse population; capacity to develop effective treatment plans; advocacy skills for clients; flexible scheduling, including availability during evenings and weekends according to client needs; ability to prioritize and organize tasks; conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills; ability to build rapport and work effectively and empathetically with assigned clients; ability to maintain professional relationships and communicate effectively with community partners, court representatives, and referral sources. Proficiency in MS Office products and navigating various electronic databases, along with sufficient typing skills, is required.
