Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks a dedicated Paralegal to join its esteemed Health Law Unit in downtown Atlanta. This impactful role contributes to the well-being of low-income individuals facing life-threatening illnesses by coordinating comprehensive services that address legal, social, and economic challenges impacting their health.

The Health Law Unit, established in 1990 as the AIDS Legal Project, has expanded its scope to encompass individuals with cancer and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). With a focus on medical-legal partnerships and ongoing service expansion, the unit comprises a Managing Attorney and two Staff Attorneys.

Responsibilities
  • Screen clients and complete questionnaires for various legal matters including Social Security, housing, employment, domestic relations, public benefits, and estate planning cases.
  • Conduct outreach at diverse locations to connect with potential clients.
  • Manage internal referrals to the Health Law Unit and create/maintain monthly intake and outreach schedules.
  • Provide clients with information and guidance under attorney supervision, prepare closing letters, draft conflict letters, and assist attorneys during estate planning executions.
  • Prepare trial binders, handle document organization, notarization, and medical records requests.
  • Make home, hospital, or hospice visits to serve clients who are unable to visit the office.
  • Maintain accurate client data by entering new case information into Legal Aid's database and manage files through scanning, filing, and archiving closed cases.
  • Train new employees and interns on case management systems, establish account logins, and request computer access and key cards for new hires.
  • Perform other paralegal duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred but not required.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and proficiency in word processing and data entry are essential. Strong Google Suite skills are also required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively communicate with clients, families, doctors, social workers, and hospital staff.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrate adaptability, appreciate diversity, and have a genuine interest in working with low-income individuals.
  • Prior experience with individuals facing serious health conditions and knowledge of health and poverty law are highly valued.
  • Experience with law office management software and proficiency in languages other than English is a plus.
