Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Principal or Senior Principal Engineer specializing in Guidance and Navigation Controls to contribute to the Vehicle Engineering division. This role is pivotal in advancing the research and development of flight control algorithms for both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles. The team is engaged in innovative avionics, guidance, navigation, and control systems for various platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, implement, verify, and test algorithms, software, and simulation tools for the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of autonomous unmanned aircraft.
- Create control laws that fulfill performance, flying qualities, and stability margin requirements, applicable both on the ground and in flight.
- Develop outer loop control laws along with associated logic and autonomy functions.
- Construct linear and non-linear dynamic simulation models of air vehicle systems and integrate these models into software and hardware-in-the-loop simulation environments.
- Conduct performance assessments and flying qualities analysis.
- Assist in non-linear simulation and hardware-in-the-loop laboratory testing.
- Support flight testing initiatives and analyze data from air vehicle flight tests.
Basic Qualifications:
- For Principal Engineer: A Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience, or a PhD with no prior experience required.
- For Senior Principal Engineer: A Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline with a minimum of 9 years of experience, or a Master's degree with at least 7 years of experience, or a PhD with a minimum of 4 years of experience.
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- A current active in-scope DoD Secret security clearance or higher, with the capability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP).
- Proficient understanding of fixed-wing aircraft flight dynamics.
- Experience in applying linear control principles and tools for designing feedback control systems.
- Experience in analyzing non-linear simulations of aircraft closed-loop dynamics.
- Familiarity with autopilot functionalities.
- Knowledge of outer loop control law performance criteria.
- Proficient in using MATLAB for data creation, processing, analysis, and visualization.
- Experience with Simulink for modeling dynamic systems.
- Experience in designing autopilot functionalities.
- Knowledge of logic, modes, and states relevant to autonomous aircraft.
- Familiarity with C/C++ programming languages.
- Familiarity with Python programming languages.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with crewed/uncrewed teaming algorithms, including Combat Air Patrol (CAP), formation flying, and hold patterns.
- Experience with NURBS curve generation.
- Familiarity with in-flight routing behaviors for Sense and Avoid, as well as 4D keep out/keep in zones.
- Knowledge of autonomy algorithms, such as Autonomous Taxi, Take Off, and Landing for control law development.
