Position Overview

Community Legal Services, Inc. (CLS) is in search of a motivated Compliance Counsel to enhance our legal framework.

Established in 1966, CLS is a private, non-profit law firm dedicated to delivering exceptional, no-cost legal services to low-income residents.

The Compliance Counsel will report directly to the Deputy Director of Legal Practice, focusing on ensuring that CLS's operations and protocols align with legal obligations and compliance standards. This role will involve developing training programs and systems to support advocates in navigating compliance-related issues, including ethical inquiries. Additionally, the Compliance Counsel will oversee potential professional liability matters and contribute to the evaluation of various contracts with external parties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and address compliance and risk management issues, including the formulation of best practices and organizational policies.
  • Draft and review policies and procedures to enhance clarity, operational efficiency, and compliance.
  • Manage and assess potential professional liability claims.
  • Assist in resolving client complaints and grievances.
  • Collaborate with CLS Legal Managers and the Ethics Committee to address legal ethics questions arising in practice.
  • Conduct legal research and provide counsel on ethical, contractual, and compliance matters.
  • Review contracts and collaborate with the legal management team on agreements with consultants and researchers.
  • Design and facilitate in-house training sessions on ethics and compliance topics.
  • Ensure adherence to state and local lobbying regulations and other compliance requirements for non-profits.
  • Work with HR and management to ensure effective case reviews and evaluations to mitigate risks.
  • Identify tools for gathering client feedback and conducting needs assessments.
  • Develop strategies for organizing and updating policies on shared digital platforms.
  • Assist with compliance and fiscal audits as necessary.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Deputy Director of Legal Practice.
Qualifications
  • Active member of the Pennsylvania Bar in good standing.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant legal experience.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong legal research and writing capabilities, with adaptability for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information.
  • Proficient problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and negotiation skills.
  • Commitment to the mission of CLS.
  • Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
Compensation and Benefits

This position offers a competitive salary range of $75,000 to $90,000, with full or part-time options available. CLS provides a comprehensive benefits package, including 100% employer-paid medical coverage, life insurance, short and long-term disability benefits, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer contributions, and a generous leave policy, featuring 13 paid holidays and five personal days each year.
