Position Summary

The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, in collaboration with the Emory University Department of Pediatrics, is inviting applications for the role of Aflac Neuro-Oncology Researcher. This center offers a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere for fundamental, clinical, and translational research, featuring a diverse faculty.

Ideal candidates will possess a robust track record of scientific achievements and a demonstrated ability to secure external funding for independent research focused on pediatric solid tumors.

About the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center

The successful applicant will become part of one of the leading pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the nation.

  • The center includes 122 faculty members and 50 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), engaging in basic, translational, and clinical research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders, with specialties in leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas, rare tumors, renal tumors, CAR T-cell therapies, hemoglobinopathies, and hemophilia.
  • Annually, over 7,000 children with cancer and blood disorders receive treatment at the center.
  • The pediatric oncology program sees approximately 500 new cancer diagnoses each year, including around 150 new solid tumors, with approximately 50 being sarcomas.
  • The pediatric hematology program is among the largest in the country, managing over 2,000 active patients with sickle cell disease and 600 with bleeding or clotting disorders.
  • The blood and marrow transplantation program conducts around 80 transplants annually and is recognized for its curative therapies for hemoglobinopathies.
  • In 2022, the center was ranked No. 8 nationally for Pediatric Cancer by US News and World Report and has consistently been in the top 10 since 2020.
  • In the same year, Aflac faculty secured $43.3 million in extramural funding, including over $27.7 million from the NIH.
  • The fellowship program accepts six fellows each year for comprehensive clinical and research training in pediatric hematology/oncology, and is one of the few pediatric programs with an NIH-funded T32 training grant in non-malignant hematology.
  • The Developmental Therapeutics Program offers a wide array of clinical trials from cooperative groups, industry partners, and investigator-initiated studies, boasting a large referral base in the southeastern United States.
  • Aflac is a significant contributor to the Children's Oncology Group, leading in therapeutic trial enrollments for the past two years and consistently ranking in the top four.

This position provides extensive opportunities for research collaboration within the Department of Pediatrics, as well as with Emory's NCI-designated cancer center, basic science departments, the Rollins School of Public Health, the American Cancer Society, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Qualifications

  • MD and/or PhD degree.
  • A strong record of scholarship and successful funding as an independent investigator, with an expectation to conduct nationally recognized research in pediatric oncology.
  • A history of academic excellence and achievement.
  • A keen interest in mentoring trainees and junior faculty to foster growth in research and scholarship.
  • A background in service or leadership within a hematology-oncology program.

Compensation will be aligned with experience and accomplishments, with a primary focus on innovative research administrative responsibilities.
