Position Description

The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center, in collaboration with the Emory University Department of Pediatrics, is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Aflac Neuro-Oncology Researcher. This center offers a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere for fundamental, clinical, and translational research, supported by a diverse faculty. Ideal candidates will possess a robust track record of scientific achievements and demonstrated success in securing external funding to pursue independent research focused on the development and treatment of pediatric solid tumors.

About the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center

The selected candidate will become part of one of the nation's leading pediatric hematology/oncology programs.

  • The center is comprised of 122 faculty members and 50 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), engaged in comprehensive research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders, with specialization in areas such as leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas, rare tumors, renal tumors, CAR T-cell therapies, hemoglobinopathies, and hemophilia.
  • Annually, over 7,000 children with cancer and blood disorders receive treatment at the center.
  • The pediatric oncology program sees approximately 500 new cancer diagnoses each year, including around 150 new solid tumors, with about 50 being sarcomas.
  • The pediatric hematology program is among the largest in the nation, with over 2,000 active patients suffering from sickle cell disease and 600 with bleeding or clotting disorders.
  • The blood and marrow transplantation program conducts around 80 transplants each year, leading in curative therapies for hemoglobinopathies.
  • In recent evaluations, the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has consistently ranked among the top pediatric cancer programs nationally.
  • The faculty has successfully generated significant extramural funding, highlighting their commitment to advancing pediatric oncology research.
  • The fellowship program attracts six fellows annually for intensive clinical and research training in pediatric hematology/oncology, supported by an NIH-funded training grant.
  • The Developmental Therapeutics Program offers a comprehensive array of clinical trials, collaborating with various research networks and organizations.
  • The center is a leading contributor to national pediatric oncology initiatives, consistently ranking high in therapeutic trial enrollments.

This role presents extensive opportunities for collaborative research within the Department of Pediatrics, the NCI-designated cancer center, and various other departments and organizations.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess:

  • An MD and/or PhD degree.
  • A proven record of scholarship and funding as an independent investigator, with a focus on collaborative research in pediatric oncology.
  • A history of academic excellence and achievement.
  • A strong commitment to mentoring trainees and junior faculty to foster growth in research and scholarship.
  • Experience in service or leadership roles within a hematology-oncology program.

Compensation will be aligned with experience and accomplishments, with a primary focus on innovative research administrative responsibilities.
