Job Summary

The Montana State University Police Department is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Police Officer Commissioned to join our team. As a key member of our department, you will play a vital role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for our students, employees, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct vehicle patrol operations, including safely and legally operating a police vehicle and equipment, detecting and taking enforcement action on observed violations of the law, and conducting traffic accident investigations.
  • Conduct DUI investigations and maintain required certifications, as well as detect and deter crime and apprehend those who violate State, local, and Federal laws as well as University policies.
  • Write comprehensive reports that clearly articulate relevant facts and support the elements of the criminal offense, and demonstrate proficiency with computer skills including Windows-based computer software skills and a records management system.
  • Interview victims, suspects, and witnesses to obtain information necessary to determine facts and circumstances of incidents, preserve crime scenes, collect and photograph evidence, and properly secure evidence maintaining chain of custody.
  • Respond to fire and medical emergencies and provide assistance as required, participate in crime prevention programs such as Adopt-A-Cop, and conduct crime and safety awareness presentations.
Requirements
  • Meet peace officer education and certification standards as set forth by the Montana Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification requirements.
  • Possess a current Montana POST certification for sworn law enforcement officer, or possess a current out-of-state equivalent certification and the ability to obtain Montana POST certification within one year.
  • Knowledge and experience with the use of firearms, experience participating in community service programs and/or events, and proficiency operating computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and the public, represent UPD and its services to others in a professional and courteous manner, and have the ability to effectively respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, have the ability to research, acquire and articulate facts and convey information with a high degree of accuracy and a compelling point of view, and have the ability to participate in group presentations to convey information.
Position Special Requirements
  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Clery Act and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
  • Must complete a one-year probationary period, pass an approved medical evaluation, psychological test, and drug screening, and pass an in-depth police background investigation.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within six months, a valid Montana driver license and have an acceptable driver record, and be willing to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotational basis.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to pass a Department of Transportation physical, and position may require exposure to extreme temperature, noise, heights, or hazardous materials.
  • Must be physically fit and able to perform foot patrol, bike patrol, and respond quickly to emergency situations.
