Position Summary
This role is essential for ensuring the safety and security of all students, faculty, staff, and the general public within the college's campuses and facilities.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Expertise in law enforcement practices and the ability to uphold law and order through continuous surveillance, crime prevention, and enforcement of applicable laws and regulations. Capable of collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and staying informed on relevant legal updates. Must maintain peace officer licensure through bi-annual TCOLE mandated training.
- Trained or willing to be trained in emergency medical response, including CPR/AED, until professional medical assistance arrives.
- Ability to assess situations promptly and accurately to determine the appropriate response. Must handle situations with firmness, courtesy, and respect for individual rights. Proficient in utilizing technology for data access, record maintenance, and report generation. Capable of preparing incident reports and providing assistance in legal proceedings as necessary. Must maintain confidentiality regarding work-related information.
- Ability to foster a positive and collaborative work environment by building effective relationships with colleagues and the community.
- Possess strong moral character and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Must be physically capable of operating various office equipment, including computers, calculators, copiers, and fax machines. The role may involve activities such as crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, bending, and pulling. Must be able to run, walk, and navigate rough terrain, as well as operate a motor vehicle for extended periods. Ability to control individuals resisting arrest and assist those who are disabled or combative.
Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with physical challenges to perform essential duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma (or equivalent) plus 30 college hours from an accredited institution or two (2) years of active military service or two (2) years of full-time paid sworn law enforcement experience from the same agency.
- Current and valid Texas Peace Officer license and driver's license required.
- Psychological testing, drug dependency screening, and a medical examination will be conducted as a condition of employment.
- Must be willing to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Official transcripts and licenses will be required.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills are preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular patrols of college facilities and property on foot, bicycle, and motor vehicle; issue citations; secure access points to the grounds and facilities. Perform preliminary investigations, gather evidence, and obtain witness statements related to incidents.
- Respond to calls and complaints from campus or dispatch to assist students, faculty, staff, and the general public with service requests or complaints.
- Engage effectively with the public, colleagues, and the Dallas College community. Communicate clearly via police radio, telephone, and in person.
- Provide daily updates to supervisors regarding ongoing investigations and potential safety hazards.
- Ensure compliance with data collection procedures as required by Texas racial profiling reporting laws.
- Handle law enforcement equipment, including handguns, batons, and defense sprays, safely and effectively, with periodic testing.
- Utilize interpersonal and communication skills effectively when interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Deliver exceptional customer service.
- Complete required professional development training hours each academic year.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
