Assistant/Associate Professor; 12-month tenure track appointment. This role encompasses 80% extension and 20% research responsibilities. The selected individual will serve as a faculty member within the LSU AgCenter Southeast Region.
The successful candidate will be tasked with establishing extension and research initiatives centered on weed management in horticultural crops, which include turfgrass, ornamentals, vegetables, and fruit orchards.
Work Location: This position will be based at the Hammond Research Station, with statewide extension responsibilities for horticultural weed science. Research activities will be conducted at the Hammond Research Station and other suitable locations.Position Description: This is a 12-month tenure track role that involves developing extension and research programs focused on weed management in horticultural crops such as turfgrass, ornamentals, vegetables, and fruit orchards. The position requires a multi-disciplinary approach, collaborating with horticulture agents, growers, and industry representatives to deliver programming for both commercial scale operations and small-scale production systems. Responsibilities include engaging with advisory committees and ANR agents across Louisiana to identify stakeholder needs, crafting programs that address those needs, and evaluating program impact on stakeholders. The role will also support stakeholder visits, demonstrations, workshops, and educational meetings. The position will contribute to and disseminate LSU AgCenter recommendations through various communication channels including written, oral, video, website, and social media. The successful candidate will be expected to prepare a strategic plan for developing and executing a statewide horticulture-based weed science educational program that focuses on clientele needs and fosters relationships with the horticulture industry and relevant commodity organizations.
The candidate will also conduct research focused on weed science management in horticultural production systems, prioritizing research that maximizes production and efficiency.
Securing extramural funding to support the research and extension program from federal and state agencies, commodity research boards, and relevant agricultural industries is essential.
Participation in regional, departmental, and campus committees is expected as a faculty member at a land grant university. Ongoing professional development through engagement with professional societies and attendance at national and international conferences will be required.The incumbent is expected to perform additional tasks as assigned by supervisors and collaborate effectively with other LSU AgCenter faculty.
Qualification Requirements: Ph.D. in weed science, agronomy, horticulture, or a closely related field is required. Experience in extension programming is highly desirable. Strong interpersonal skills and leadership abilities are necessary for effective collaboration with diverse professional and lay audiences.The candidate must possess excellent communication skills (both oral and written) to engage effectively with diverse audiences, including scientific peers, clientele, and agribusiness representatives.
Development of scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles and educational curricula/programs for appropriate publications/journals and other outlets is expected for professional growth.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The LSU AgCenter offers an attractive benefits package with a variety of options.
