Job Title: Swim Team Head Coach

Are you a passionate and experienced swim coach looking for a new challenge? We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Swim Team Head Coach to lead our swim team program at the YMCA of Greater Boston.

Job Summary:

The Swim Team Head Coach will be responsible for the overall management and success of our swim team program, including coaching, team development, and administrative tasks. This is a full-time, exempt position that requires a strong passion for swimming and a commitment to developing the skills and character of our athletes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and lead a quality swim team program that is inclusive and supportive of all athletes, staff, and volunteers.
  • Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all athletes, parents, and staff.
  • Develop and implement age and skill level appropriate workouts and sets for daily practices.
  • Evaluate swimmer progress, provide individual feedback, guidance, and coaching towards their goals.
  • Act as a key liaison for the Boston YMCA Blue Fins with other teams, organizations, and swim meets.
  • Host two large swim meets annually, promoting and working with attending teams to ensure a quality experience.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Aquatics Director for pool times, swimmer needs, parent compliments, and concerns.
  • Role model the YMCA core values and lead by example the work ethic, commitment, and character expected from our swimmers.
  • Provide swim assessments and additional clinics to prospective and current athletes.
  • Hold swimmers accountable to standards of conduct.
Staff, Volunteer, and Swim Meet Management:
  • Lead others by example with strong, clear, and achievable expectations in both results and conduct of character.
  • Directly supervise full-time assistant directors, paid and volunteer coaches, providing development and feedback to staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure compliance with mandatory certifications, safety protocols, policies, and required training for all staff and volunteers.
  • Hire, onboard, and train new staff and volunteers in accordance with YMCA best practices and guidelines.
  • Process accurate payroll for paid staff.
  • Organize, promote, and operate two large-scale swim meets annually.
Administration:
  • Utilize strong organizational and communication skills to efficiently and effectively manage a quality swim team program.
  • Accurately manage enrollment and team roster, ensuring completed registration, forms, and required documentation for each athlete.
  • Ensure billing accuracy and fulfillment, following up with outstanding balances to collect.
  • Develop and manage a department budget of $425,000+ revenue and applicable expenses, meeting budget goals.
  • Keep in constant communication with parents and athletes via phone, text, email, and other applicable systems.
  • Manage travel and hotel arrangements for self and staff/volunteers for swim meets, coordinating with parents and athletes on travel arrangements.
  • Record athlete times in applicable systems in a timely manner.
  • Manage outside partnerships, working with the executive team on contract renewals.
  • Manage team sponsorships, ensuring compliance with agreements, ease of access for athletes and parents, etc.
  • Plan and facilitate annual lap-a-thon fundraising event, meeting or exceeding fundraising goals.
  • Take an active role as part of the Burbank YMCA Leadership Team, attending team meetings, supporting branch-wide initiatives, managing on-duty, etc.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree Required.
  • 3+ Years of Competitive Swim Coaching Experience Required.
  • Previous experience as a head coach or assistant coach preferred.
  • Previous experience hosting or operating swim meets preferred.
  • Swim Official and Lifeguard Certification a plus.
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise:
  • Develop strong relationships with athletes, parents, and staff by being a good listener, caring about their well-being, and checking in on their progress.
  • Exceptional organizational and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication skills verbally (in person and over the phone) and written.
  • Able to multi-task.
  • Budget management.
  • Able to be efficient, proficient, and knowledgeable in competitive swimming and coaching.
  • Proficient use of MS Office products, Customer Management Systems (CMS), Swim Meet Management & Swim Time recording systems.
