ABOUT GALT

Galt is a vibrant community with approximately 26,000 residents located approximately 20 miles south of Sacramento along Highway 99. The City is governed by five elected council members, with the Mayor being appointed.

Galt is known for its affordable housing and small-town atmosphere, making it an ideal place for families and new businesses. The City hosts annual events such as the Independence Day Celebration and the Winter Bird Festival, along with the Galt Market, an open-air market held every Tuesday and Wednesday offering a variety of goods.

Sports and Recreation play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life in Galt. With its mild climate and numerous parks, Galt provides a range of activities for all ages, including t-ball, baseball, football, soccer, swimming, karate, and various exercise classes.

ABOUT THE POSITION
This role is responsible for overseeing the implementation and evaluation of sports leagues, general supervision of staff, and the organization of tournaments and new leagues.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Parks & Recreation Director and, in their absence, from a Recreation Program Supervisor. Provides general and direct supervision to part-time recreation leaders and sports officials.

Example of Duties
  • Organizing and scheduling sports leagues and tournaments (e.g., adult/youth basketball, softball, baseball, and volleyball).
  • Implementing policies and regulations.
  • Providing general direction and oversight to staff.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of: Modern principles, practices, and methods used in league and tournament operations.

Ability to: Develop, plan, and assess league and tournament sports programs. Supervise, train, and evaluate recreational personnel and volunteers. Communicate effectively with the public and department staff. Understand and execute verbal and written instructions. Arrive at work punctually and reliably; work varied hours, including weekends and holidays. Work in an office environment that may involve extended periods of sitting and operating office equipment. Meet physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties, including activities involving stooping, bending, and lifting objects up to fifty (50) pounds. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Supplemental Information

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old at the time of appointment. Three (3) or more years in recreation work or directing group activities. One (1) or more years equivalent to Recreation Worker II with the City of Galt is highly desirable.

Training: Completion of an accredited first aid and CPR training program within the last 2 years.

License: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and/or recreational facility setting and use standard office and/or recreation equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed material and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Must possess the physical stamina to lift and move tables and chairs, arrange facilities for community events and/or meetings. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background investigation, including fingerprinting. May be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays at a variety of City facilities.
