Position Overview

Advocate Aurora Health is in search of a dedicated Surgical Services Technician to join our team.

Role Responsibilities
  • Scrub Role Duties:
    • Prepare and maintain a sterile environment for surgical procedures.
    • Adhere to protocols for handling specimens and managing surgical instruments.
    • Assist surgeons during operations by providing necessary support such as sponging and suctioning.
    • Mentor and educate peers in a collaborative manner.
    • Be available for on-call duties as required.
    • Act promptly in emergency situations, prioritizing patient care.
    • Ensure compliance with safety standards in the workplace.
    • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team by having all required items readily accessible.
    • Participate in the surgical Time Out process to confirm readiness for the procedure.
  • Surgical Field Preparation:
    • Verify the availability and readiness of instruments and supplies according to physician preferences.
    • Assist in the opening of sterile supplies and instruments.
    • Contribute to the cleanup and turnover of the surgical area post-procedure.
    • Utilize resources efficiently to minimize waste.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Support the goals of the Surgical Services department.
    • Share clinical knowledge with colleagues in a constructive manner.
    • Demonstrate initiative in managing work responsibilities.
    • Report any issues with instruments or equipment to the appropriate personnel.
  • Policy Compliance:
    • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
    • Follow established standards of behavior in interactions with team members and patients.
    • Promote patient safety by reporting concerns and participating in safety initiatives.
    • Act as an advocate for patients by collaborating with the healthcare team.
  • Professional Development:
    • Stay current with professional competencies.
    • Engage in self-directed learning and skill enhancement.
    • Participate in committees and projects within the unit.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a surgical technologist program or equivalent experience.
Essential Skills
  • CPR certification required.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist must be obtained within three months of employment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in environments with exposure to bodily fluids and hazardous materials.
  • Availability for on-call shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Capability to lift patients and equipment as needed.
  • Flexibility to adapt to high-pressure situations.
