Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Certified Surgical Technician to join our team at Advocate Health. As a key member of our perioperative care team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparation and Maintenance of the Surgical Field
    • Verify the availability and readiness of instruments, supplies, and equipment per physician preference card.
    • Verify specific needs of the physician by thoroughly reading scrub tips.
    • Assist in opening sterile supplies and instruments.
    • Assist with clean up and turnover upon completion of the case.
    • Efficiently utilize supplies to avoid waste and decrease costs.
  • Collaboration with the Healthcare Team
    • Assist in maintaining the established goals of Surgical Services and Advocate Health.
    • Share clinical and professional knowledge in a supportive and educational manner.
    • Demonstrate self-direction in utilizing work time appropriately.
    • Accept and complete team responsibilities as assigned.
    • Inform the Team Leader of changes to the physician preference cards.
    • Ensure proper instrument and equipment function; tagging and reporting any broken or malfunctioning equipment/instruments to the supervisor.
  • Compliance with Hospital Policies and Procedures
    • Maintain patient confidentiality.
    • Utilize Standards of Behavior with members of the healthcare team and patients.
    • Promote a culture of patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating in safety initiatives.
    • Act as a patient advocate to ensure patient welfare by collaborating with physicians and the healthcare team.
  • Maintenance of Professional Growth
    • Maintain current competencies.
    • Demonstrate self-direction in maintaining professional skills.
    • Independently complete assignments/projects.
    • Participate in unit/hospital committees and projects.
    • Maintain educational records and timecards.
Requirements
  • Graduate of a surgical technologist program or 2 years of surgical scrub experience.
  • CPR certification.
  • Ability to obtain Certified Surgical Technologist certification within 3 months of employment.
Working Conditions
  • Must be willing to work with exposures to body fluids, waste, and chemicals, radiation, hazardous materials, anesthesia gases, and life-threatening diseases.
  • On-call availability (nights, weekends, holidays).
  • Rotating shifts.
  • Ability to move heavy patients and equipment and to stand for long periods of time.
  • Flexibility to deal with stressful, changing environments.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Ability to communicate, cooperate, and work well with others.
