Job Title: Second Mate, Tug and Barge Operations

Estimated Salary: $80,000 - $110,000 per year

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Second Mate to join our team at Centerline Logistics Corporation. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Captain in the safe operation of a tug and barge.

Key Responsibilities
  • Stand wheelhouse watch alternating with the Captain
  • Oversee the safety of the vessel, including all installed equipment and inspections thereof
  • Maintain chart corrections and light lists for the Area of Operations
  • Instruct deckhands on the use of all tools and machinery onboard the vessel
  • Assist the Captain in barge landings and communicate distances and directions accurately and concisely
  • Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary
  • Inspect the vessel for cleanliness
  • Inventory supplies and order as appropriate
  • Monitor onboard usage to ensure supplies are utilized efficiently
Requirements
  • Experience towing barges as a Mate, preferably oil barges
  • Minimum 200 Ton Mate License Near Coastal
  • Mate of Towing Endorsement Near Coastal
  • Radar observer endorsement and Coast Guard approved firefighting training
  • Ability to understand and use information in cargo information cards and material safety data sheets
  • Possess a valid first aid/CPR certificate
  • Complete HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hire
  • Valid state driver license
Working Conditions
  • Ability to live in confined spaces and get along with crew members for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to perform the functions set forth in the attached job analysis and be physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, kneel while painting, climb onto barges and up and down ladders, and bending and twisting during boat/barge tie up
  • Work aboard boats and barges using pike poles, heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools for repairs, paint, thinner, paint brushes/rollers, paint chipping tools, cleaning solvents, kitchen utensils/cookware, power cords
  • Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
  • Must not be afraid of heights
