Polysomnography Technologist Overview

Job Title: Health Technician/Technologist

Company: Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)

As a Polysomnography Technologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, your role encompasses conducting both standard and intricate overnight sleep assessments, alongside multiple sleep latency tests and maintenance of wakefulness evaluations. A critical aspect of this position involves monitoring various physiological parameters throughout sleep studies. This includes tracking oxygen saturation, EKG, EEG, respiratory rates, ETCO2 levels, and additional metrics to ensure a thorough analysis of patients' sleep behaviors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate physician directives and protocols for each sleep assessment while addressing patients' sleep/wake concerns.
  • Engage with patients to understand their conditions, including medication use, sleep habits, and treatment requirements.
  • Guide patients in the operation of CPAP/BI-level devices to alleviate any apprehensions.
  • Prepare and calibrate monitoring devices, apply necessary electrodes, and administer supplemental oxygen when required.
  • Observe patients during sleep assessments, interpret irregular data, and communicate findings to sleep specialists.
  • Act promptly and effectively in response to medical issues such as cardiac arrhythmias and respiratory incidents.
  • Document post-sleep calibrations, safely remove equipment following infection control protocols, and compile detailed intervention reports.
  • Conduct and score Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLTs) and generate reports for reviewing physicians.
  • Participate in seminars and meetings to enhance industry knowledge and skills.
Qualifications:
  • Preferred registration by the BRPT and CPR certification.
  • Adhere to AASM guidelines for Continuing Medical Education (CME).
Required Skills and Competencies:
  • Ability to work flexible hours, particularly during night shifts.
  • Familiarity with Natus/ResMed equipment and a willingness to learn new software tools.
  • Basic proficiency in MS applications and strong documentation capabilities.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
Educational Background:
  • Completion of a certified hospital or secondary sleep training program, or a certified AASM/A-Step program.
Experience:
  • No prior experience is necessary, although previous experience is beneficial.
