Position Overview

The primary responsibility of this role is to develop control and safety algorithms essential for the new instruments and accessories of the da Vinci Surgical System.

Key skills required include expertise in robot kinematics, control systems, and a comprehensive understanding of electro-mechanical systems.

You will oversee the teleoperated motion and force fidelity of new surgical instruments and the integration of new accessories with the robotic system.


Key Responsibilities:


1. Collaborate closely with the clinical development team to ascertain performance requirements for instruments and accessories.
2. Utilize analysis and experimentation to gain a thorough understanding of the mechanisms' behavior and limitations.
3. Work in tandem with the mechanical design team to characterize and optimize mechanisms for performance and safety.
4. Modify and fine-tune algorithms that govern the mechanisms' behavior.
5. Implement new features while maintaining existing software functionalities.

You will also be responsible for conducting risk analyses and implementing safety algorithms.

Documentation of risks, requirements, and testing protocols will be necessary to support regulatory approval requests.

Collaboration with the manufacturing team to develop automated fixtures for calibration, testing, and assembly of instruments will be part of your duties.

Setting manufacturing test specifications to ensure mechanical performance is also expected.

It is essential to possess a broad technical knowledge that allows for a comprehensive view of the entire project. You will act as a liaison between various technical specialties and take ownership of issues that span multiple disciplines, leveraging your diverse skill set to ensure project success.


Qualifications:

• PhD with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a robotics-related field.
• Demonstrated intuitive understanding of electro-mechanical phenomena with the ability to conduct rigorous and detailed analyses.
• Proficiency in C/C++ and Matlab programming, along with hardware, software, and mechanism integration skills. Knowledge of Python is a plus.
• Familiarity with classical and modern servo control systems.
• Understanding of robot kinematics.
• Knowledge of statistical methods is advantageous.
• Familiarity with electrical and mechanical design principles and CAD tools is beneficial.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
