Position Overview
Under the guidance of supervisory staff, this role involves the provision of essential care and upkeep for various species of laboratory animals. Responsibilities include feeding, general husbandry, and sanitation of housing and related equipment within BSL-3 and ABSL-3 environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct general animal husbandry tasks, including changing holding areas and providing feed and water using specialized techniques and equipment.
- Maintain laboratory facilities, ensuring the cleanliness of animal holding areas, cage wash areas, and associated corridors. Evaluate the condition of caging equipment and recommend necessary repairs or replacements.
- Oversee the sanitization and decontamination processes for BSL-3/ABSL-3 rooms and equipment. Implement biological safety protocols for the disposal of bio-hazardous materials and the autoclaving of hazardous waste. Report any facility-related concerns.
- Perform euthanasia on small laboratory animals when required.
- Execute established policies and procedures, including conducting animal health assessments, monitoring sentinel animals, and adhering to protocols for overcrowded cages and deceased animals.
- Ensure compliance with animal care and environmental policies and procedures at all times.
- Identify and report any deviations in animal health and welfare to the supervisor.
- Ensure that facilities and equipment are maintained in optimal working condition. Coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs as necessary, and may perform minor repairs if qualified.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED is required.
Experience
Approximately one year of experience in laboratory animal care is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Completion of regular and additional BSL3/ABSL3 safety training.
- Demonstrated understanding of animal health and disease fundamentals, as well as the procedures for cleaning and sterilizing caging and operating equipment necessary for laboratory animal care.
- Ability to follow both oral and written instructions effectively.
- Engagement in on-the-job training to develop new skills and implement updated policies.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certification by AALAS as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) is required.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
This position necessitates full mobility and the capability to regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds, with frequent lifting or moving of up to 50 pounds. The role requires standing for extended periods and the ability to climb and work from ladders and platforms. Exposure to dust, dirt, unpleasant odors, laboratory animals, animal waste, and hot and humid environments is expected. There is a potential risk of animal bites, scratches, and exposure to needles, sharp instruments, infectious agents, and hazardous materials. Protective equipment, including uniforms, steel-toe shoes, masks, aprons, gloves, and head covers, is provided and mandatory for specific tasks. Work assignments may include weekends and holidays.
