Position Overview

Role Summary:
This position is responsible for delivering exceptional customer service, scheduling laboratory services, and performing phlebotomy tasks within the UNC Rex Laboratory departments.

Key Responsibilities:
1) Adhere to safety protocols by wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Replace any soiled or damaged PPE promptly. Maintain a tidy and professional workspace throughout the shift, ensuring that supplies are replenished and any soiled areas are cleaned at the end of the shift.

2) Exhibit excellent customer service skills when handling phone inquiries, taking messages, transferring calls, and communicating laboratory results. Ensure professional communication with colleagues and collaborate effectively to guarantee the accuracy and completeness of procedures. Answer calls within three (3) rings and provide information to enhance laboratory communication. Inform medical staff if there are delays or cancellations in specimen collection.

3) Maintain proficiency in the Hospital ADT system and LIS/IT computer programs. Register patients and order tests in the necessary computer systems. Stay updated on insurance and software changes. Manage orders for laboratory services and retrieve results from the hospital's electronic medical records for physicians and patients.

4) Collect demographic information from patients or laboratory requisitions and enter accurate data into the appropriate systems. Complete all necessary federal and regulatory forms for the registration process, including obtaining signed consents and financial agreements. Directly enter laboratory tests into the electronic medical record.

5) Perform specimen collection through venipuncture, fingerstick, and culture techniques as required, adhering to established policies and procedures. Provide clear instructions to patients regarding specimen collection and verify requirements before proceeding. Ensure positive patient identification throughout the collection process and maintain compliance with chain of custody procedures for urine and blood alcohol specimens.

6) Register outreach specimens following standard operating procedures. Sort courier drop-offs and document them in the received log. Accurately label specimens and order the appropriate tests while following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.

7) Manage departmental supplies and inventory effectively. Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains according to standard operating procedures. Notify relevant staff of any inventory issues and utilize reagents with shorter expiration dates first. Ensure proper storage and disposal of samples and reagents.

8) Participate in training and educational activities. Assist in the onboarding and education of new and existing employees. Document the review of revised and new standard operating procedures and assist in their development as needed.

Ensure compliance with mandatory policies, job descriptions, and complete annual safety training within established timeframes. Maintain continuing education requirements as per policy and complete competency materials within the designated period.

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Phlebotomy certification is strongly preferred.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • One (1) year of phlebotomy experience is required if possessing a high school diploma.
  • No prior experience is required if graduated from a phlebotomy program.
