Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Instrumentation Specialist to join our team at UL. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for improving existing laboratory tests and processes by identifying and applying new laboratory instrumentation, automation, and test fixtures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate designated laboratory equipment and tools as directed.
  • Respond to user requests to repair and/or modify existing laboratory instrumentation, automated systems, and test fixtures.
  • Record observed or calculated data on appropriate UL forms as the record of laboratory support activities.
  • Plan laboratory support activities and evaluate results as directed.
  • Build, install, test, and validate new instrumentation, automated systems, and test fixtures for laboratory tests and processes to ensure they meet technical and user requirements.
  • Ensure both new and existing test systems meet safety requirements and compliance with local laws.
  • Update and maintain automation hardware and/or software as needed.
  • Prepare technical documentation such as manual instructions for hardware and software, calibration procedures, test method validations, etc.
  • Advise and train others on the use of laboratory instrumentation, automated systems, and test fixtures.
  • Assist in developing annual budgetary goals, capital expenditure budget for laboratory equipment, and tactical plans for the assigned laboratory section.
  • Proactively seek automation opportunities to resolve complex testing issues.
  • Ensure customer convenient solutions meet both customer and company needs.

Requirements:

  • 4 years directly related experience in the calibration and/or development and support of laboratory instrumentation, automation tools, and processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operations, maintenance, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to compose routine reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to present standard information and respond to questions from individuals or small groups of internal or external clients.
