Position Overview

The Chief Biosecurity Officer - Food Safety is tasked with overseeing regulatory services associated with the execution of Primary Production and Processing Standards (the Standards) for horticultural producers. This role is crucial as it ensures that producers of leafy vegetables, melons, and berries adhere to the new food safety standards set forth by the regulatory body.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and nurture effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to foster cooperation and trust in the Primary Production and Processing Standards.
  • Guide horticultural enterprises through the regulatory landscape by providing insights and advice on compliance with the Standards.
  • Deliver expert information and guidance on food safety risk assessment, management, and verification protocols.
  • Assist in validating that existing food safety frameworks meet the Standards' requirements.
  • Monitor compliance among regulated horticultural entities, including conducting audits and leading investigations into regulatory breaches.
  • Respond to biosecurity incidents and agricultural emergencies as necessary.

Qualifications and Expertise

  • A tertiary degree in Agricultural Science, Science, or a related scientific discipline is essential.
  • Proven technical expertise in horticulture and/or food safety within a primary production context, along with experience in a regulatory auditing environment.
  • A valid Driver's License is required.

Work Environment

This is a permanent position that offers flexible working arrangements. The role involves a significant amount of travel for on-site audits and meetings with producers.
