Job Summary

This position is based in Grand Rapids, MI, and involves working with a multifaceted utility and telecommunications engineering firm serving clients throughout the Midwest. The Field Utility Specialist is responsible for collaborating with office staff to understand project requirements while physically inspecting gas, electric, and data utility systems. This role requires a disciplined individual who can utilize GIS data collection systems, IKE Pole Forman, and Ike Office to provide detailed data from multiple locations daily.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct physical inspections of gas, electric, and data utility systems, as well as associated materials and components.
  • Communicate with customers regarding temporary service disruptions for upgrades and new facility installations.
  • Maintain and replace power company facilities, including DTE meters on residential and commercial locations.
  • Prepare sketches, locate, and document required information electronically.
  • Apply and analyze standards and authorities, plans, and specifications provided by designers and engineers.
  • Ensure compliance with owner, MES, and MIOSHA site safety rules and regulations.
  • Collaborate with utility planners, consultants, and engineers to understand project scope and requirements.
  • Accurately measure, document, record, evaluate, and assess existing utility structures.


Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum two years of experience working with construction, engineering, or facilities maintenance.
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record check results.
  • Excellent attendance and professional communication skills.
  • OSHA confined space training certification preferred.
  • Ability to understand basic principles of public and private utilities.
  • Ability to learn and understand civil, structural, electrical, and communication systems and structures.


Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Primarily work outdoors in extreme temperatures.
  • Regularly required to walk long distances.
  • Frequently lifts or moves objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Climb ladders and access utility infrastructure and cables.
  • Travel within the Midwest states.


Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly compensation range: $17.00 to $22.00.
