Job Description

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly qualified Assistant Professor in Counseling to join our faculty at South Dakota State University. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching, research, and service in the School of Education, Counseling, and Human Development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Teaching: Teach graduate courses in a CACREP-approved master's level program, including clinical courses such as Practicum and/or Internship.
  • Research and Scholarship: Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research with interest in clinical mental health counseling, college counseling and student affairs, marriage and counseling, school counseling or rehabilitation counseling.
  • Service: Sustained participation in professional activities, scholarly activities, and service to the profession.
  • Advising and Mentorship: Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.
  • Community Engagement: Engage in service to the university and community.
Requirements:
  • Earned Doctorate: Earned doctorate from a CACREP-accredited Counselor Education program by August 2024 or an equivalent doctorate plus one year full-time in a CACREP accredited counseling program prior to the school year.
  • Eligibility for Licensure: Eligibility for licensure and/or certification in the state of South Dakota.
  • Knowledge of CACREP Standards: Knowledge of CACREP standards.
  • Effective Communication Skills: Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Teaching Ability: Ability to teach in university settings (on-campus, online and hybrid).
  • Scholarly Activity: Potential for scholarly activity, publication, and success in obtaining external funding to support research activity.
  • Clinical Supervision Skills: Clinical supervision skills at the graduate level.
  • Professional Engagement: Actively identify with the counseling profession through sustained memberships in counseling organizations.
  • Maintenance of Certifications and/or Licenses: Maintain certifications and/or licenses pertinent to the counseling specialty area(s).
  • Evidence of Professional Engagement: Evidence of sustained professional engagement through at least two of the following: (i) Sustained professional development and renewal activities related to counseling, (ii) professional service and advocacy in counseling, (iii) ongoing counseling practice, or (iv) research and scholarly activity in counseling.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Online Course Development: Experience with online course development and integration of innovative technology to enhance curriculum.
  • Experience Working in Rural and Frontier Communities: Experience working within rural and frontier communities.
