Assistant Director, Bibliographic Description Unit Leader

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Assistant Director to lead the Bibliographic Description Unit at Yale University Library. The successful candidate will provide strategic direction and leadership for the unit, overseeing the cataloging and metadata services for special collections materials.
The Assistant Director will work closely with the Associate Director to develop and implement policies, procedures, and priorities for the unit, ensuring the discovery and sustainable stewardship of special collections bibliographic materials. This includes collaborating with other librarians and libraries at Yale, promoting the use of current and emerging technologies, and participating in professional activities outside of Yale.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in bibliographic standards and metadata, with experience in cataloging using AACR2/RDA, DCRM, and MARC. They will also possess excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical services processes and issues to non-specialist audiences.
The Assistant Director will lead and manage a team of staff, providing training, setting priorities, and staff development. They will also participate in unit and departmental planning, serving on Library and University committees, and contributing to the development of workflows and procedures.

Key Responsibilities- Provide strategic direction and leadership for the Bibliographic Description Unit
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and priorities for the unit
- Collaborate with other librarians and libraries at Yale
- Promote the use of current and emerging technologies
- Participate in professional activities outside of Yale
- Lead and manage a team of staff
- Provide training, set priorities, and staff development
- Participate in unit and departmental planning
- Serve on Library and University committees
- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction in a research library
- Demonstrated ability and achievement in managing staff
- Demonstrated ability with integrated library system and electronic resource management
- Demonstrated ability cataloging a variety of library materials in all formats
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communications and analytical ability
- Demonstrated technical aptitude with strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail
- Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, flexibility, and a strong commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills, experience coordinating projects, and the ability to bring projects to fruition
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and independently with various groups within a complex organization and rapidly changing team environment
- Experience cataloging rare or special collections materials
- Demonstrated knowledge of American or European history or literature
- Strong bibliographic knowledge of ancient or modern European languages
- Familiarity with linked data concepts and/or applications
- Demonstrated knowledge of search and discovery, user experience, and/or assessment for special collections
