Job Title: Assistant Director, Bibliographic Description Unit

Yale University Library is seeking an experienced librarian to serve as Assistant Director, Bibliographic Description Unit. The successful candidate will provide leadership and vision for the unit, managing all aspects of cataloging library materials in all formats.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the copy-cataloging team and set policies, procedures, and priorities for the team.
  • Manage staff, including training, setting priorities, and staff development.
  • Collaborate with other librarians and libraries at Yale.
  • Promote the use of current and emerging technologies.
  • Work independently with varied user groups in a complex organization, and function collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Serve on Library and University committees.
  • Participate in professional activities outside of Yale and monitor developments and best practices elsewhere to encourage innovation and ensure the excellence of the Library.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction in a research library.
  • Demonstrated ability and achievement in managing staff.
  • Demonstrated ability with integrated library system and electronic resource management.
  • Demonstrated ability cataloging a variety of library materials in all formats.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communications and analytical ability.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude with strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, flexibility, and a strong commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, experience coordinating projects, and the ability to bring projects to fruition.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and independently with various groups within a complex organization and rapidly changing team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience cataloging rare or special collections materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of American or European history or literature.
  • Strong bibliographic knowledge of ancient or modern European languages.
  • Familiarity with linked data concepts and/or applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of search and discovery, user experience, and/or assessment for special collections.
