Position Overview

Make a Difference at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts

The Community Engagement Instructor (Chorus) serves as a dedicated vocal artist and educator, committed to fostering artistic growth among children, teens, adults, and educators. This role encompasses teaching various components of the Arts Education Partnership Program, conducting Professional Development Workshops, and facilitating the Day @ the Straz Field Trip Program, along with other educational initiatives as assigned.

Situated in a vibrant urban setting, the Straz Center offers flexible working hours, event-driven schedules including evenings and weekends, and a collaborative work atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivering instruction to primary and secondary students, as well as adult learners in choral music, while ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.
  • Inspiring participants to cultivate an interest in and appreciation for the art of music.
  • Guiding participants in developing their knowledge, skills, and talents in music through diverse instructional methods tailored to their interests and abilities.
  • Planning and implementing educational arts programming suitable for various age groups, from Pre-K to Adult.
  • Utilizing a range of teaching techniques and musical selections appropriate for the students' ages and skill levels.
  • Providing evaluations for each student, either verbally or in writing.
  • Submitting course outlines as needed to the Community Engagement and Music Departments.
  • Participating in professional development sessions and team meetings.
  • Collaborating with the Community Partnership Coordinator on scheduling and curriculum development.
  • Handling administrative tasks as required.
  • Engaging in pre-planning and post-planning discussions.
  • Representing the Community Partnership Program at community events as an ambassador when requested.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Professional experience as an artist in the relevant field within the last five years.
  • Proven knowledge and application of effective classroom management strategies to maintain a productive learning environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Collaborative decision-making skills in a team setting.
  • Detail-oriented with the capacity to manage several tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver's license.

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, Vocal Performance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant certification or substantial training and/or performance experience is required.
  • Experience as a choir director is essential.
