Position Overview

Become a Key Contributor at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts

The Community Engagement Instructor (Chorus) serves as a skilled vocal artist and educator dedicated to fostering artistic growth among children, teens, adults, and educators. This role encompasses teaching within various programs, including the Arts Education Partnership Program, Professional Development Workshops, and the Day @ the Straz Field Trip Program, along with other instructional initiatives as assigned.

Situated in a vibrant cultural hub, the Straz Center offers adaptable working hours, event-driven schedules that may include evenings and weekends, and a collaborative work atmosphere.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Deliver instruction to primary and secondary students, as well as adult learners, in the domain of choral music while ensuring a safe and structured learning environment.
  • Inspire participants to cultivate an interest in and appreciation for the art of music.
  • Guide participants in developing their knowledge, skills, and talents in music, employing a range of instructional methods tailored to their interests and abilities.
  • Plan and implement educational arts programming suitable for various age groups, from Pre-K through Adult.
  • Utilize diverse instructional techniques and musical selections appropriate for the students' ages and skill levels.
  • Provide evaluations for each student, either verbally or in writing.
  • Submit course descriptions as needed to the Community Engagement Department and Music Department.
  • Participate in professional development sessions and staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Community Partnership Coordinator on scheduling and curriculum development.
  • Handle administrative tasks as required.
  • Engage in pre-planning and post-planning meetings.
  • Act as a representative of the Community Partnership Program at community events when requested.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Professional artist with experience in the field within the last five years.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated application of effective classroom management strategies to maintain a productive learning environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Collaborative decision-making skills in a team setting.
  • Detail-oriented with the capacity to manage various tasks simultaneously.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and appropriate auto insurance coverage are required.

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, Vocal Performance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant certification or significant training and/or performance experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience as a choir director is essential.
