Job Summary

The Clinical Unit Support Specialist provides a diverse range of assistance for the assigned units. This role encompasses clerical responsibilities such as maintaining patient documentation, managing unit supplies, and facilitating communication within the healthcare team. The specialist engages in patient care activities as permitted by established protocols and interacts with patients, families, and staff throughout the facility. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, this position collaborates effectively with the healthcare team to deliver quality care to patients across various age groups, including adolescents, adults, and seniors. Adherence to population-specific guidelines and National Patient Safety Goals is essential.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or Certifications: Current Georgia Certified Nursing Assistant or completion of Fundamentals of Nursing Course for nursing students.
  • Educational Requirements: Proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics at a 10th-grade level or higher, demonstrated by a High School Diploma, GED, or high school transcript.
  • Minimum Experience: No prior experience is necessary; comprehensive on-the-job training in hospital practices and medical terminology will be provided. Previous experience as a nursing assistant or unit aide is advantageous.

  • Ability to follow directions from nursing staff and perform designated skills and procedures.
  • Typing skills are preferred but not mandatory; familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) is beneficial.

  • Capacity to maintain focus amid multiple interactions and interruptions.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Collects and reports basic patient physiological data (e.g., vital signs, weight, skin condition).
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics to assist with positioning, mobility, hygiene, and comfort needs.
  • Monitors and documents fluid intake and output.
  • Identifies and reports changes in physical and mental status to licensed staff.
  • Organizes patient care and prioritizes tasks based on physician and nursing orders.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures within the job scope and reports patient responses to the supervising nurse.
  • Makes regular rounds to patient rooms and responds promptly to call lights.
  • Explains procedures to patients prior to implementation.
  • Accurately records patient data and communicates it to supervisory staff within established timelines.
  • Responds to patient intercoms and directs requests to appropriate staff.
  • Coordinates dietary requests and informs the Dietary Department of changes.
  • Implements emergency procedures as per policy.
  • Prepares rooms for new admissions and ensures necessary supplies are available.
  • Greets patients and families warmly and orients them to the unit and room.
  • Answers phones courteously and directs calls appropriately.
  • Maintains patient charts by organizing and replenishing forms as needed.
  • Participates in staff meetings and maintains communication via email in a timely manner.
  • Exhibits flexibility in scheduling to meet departmental needs.
  • Completes competency assessments within designated timelines.
