Job Overview:


The Dosimetrist is responsible for developing detailed treatment strategies for patients receiving radiation therapy, collaborating closely with the Radiation Oncology team to ensure effective dosimetry procedures.

This role requires a deep understanding of radiation oncology treatment modalities and imaging technologies, maintaining expertise in contemporary treatment planning and delivery methods, including but not limited to 3DCRT, IMRT, VMAT, SRS/SBRT, IORT, and Brachytherapy.

The Dosimetrist also contributes significantly to quality assurance (QA) initiatives by executing radiation dose verifications through additional calculations and measurements, conducting multi-modality image assessments, and supporting physics-related tasks such as QA and patient-specific QA measurements, radiation surveys, and calibration of radiation-emitting devices as directed by the Medical Physicist.


Key Responsibilities:


- Formulate radiation treatment plans utilizing computer software and/or manual calculations to deliver prescribed radiation doses through various techniques, adhering to the directives of radiation oncologists.

- Ensure the mathematical precision of all calculations following the protocols established by the medical physicist.


- Accurately document all relevant medical information in patient records, whether electronically or otherwise, in compliance with local and national regulations.

- Demonstrate knowledge of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional anatomy through various imaging modalities, including planar x-rays, CT, MRI, PET, PET/CT, and ultrasound.


- Conduct multi-modality image evaluations as required, including rigid and deformable registrations, and identify and contour critical anatomical structures in diverse imaging formats.


- Understand the significance of critical organs and their dose limits when designing treatment plans, in accordance with departmental guidelines and/or radiation oncologists' directives.


- Collaborate with the radiation therapy, medical physics, and physician teams to advise on optimal treatment positioning and the development of associated treatment aids, molds, casts, and immobilization devices for patients.


- Assist in the planning and creation of compensation filters, 2D and 3D molds, custom shields, missing tissue compensators, bolus, and other means of modifying devices.


- Execute or assist in specific radiation dose measurement techniques, including the use of ionization chambers, electronic portal imaging, in-vivo dosimetry, film, or other measurement methods as directed by the medical physicist.


- Meet all quality assurance and documentation requirements for patients involved in various clinical or institutional trials, studies, and protocols, and assist with data collection and submission.


- Engage in investigative projects and clinical initiatives as requested, focusing on treatment planning, image analysis, quality assurance, documentation, and the maintenance of patient databases.


- Actively pursue continuing education in current treatment planning techniques and advancements in radiation oncology and medical physics.

- Participate in chart rounds, tumor boards, and other multi-disciplinary conferences as requested, presenting cases as necessary.


- Contribute to employee performance evaluations, performance improvement initiatives, and participate in the recruitment of new personnel as needed.


Additional Qualifications:
- Experience: N/A

- Education: Bachelor's degree or higher OR Associate degree for candidates with active MDCB certification. Candidates must be MDCB Certified or graduates from a JRCERT accredited Medical Dosimetry program or eligible for certification by the MDCB within three years of hire. A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.
- License, Certification, Registration: Medical Dosimetrist Certificate within 36 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a certified medical dosimetrist.
- Familiarity with Varian Eclipse treatment planning, ARIA electronic charting, and EPIC medical records systems is preferred.
- Previous experience as a radiation therapist.
- Completion of a diploma from a Medical Dosimetry JRCERT accredited program of at least 12 months OR at least 36 months (or FTE hours 5,460) of clinical medical dosimetry experience within the last six years under the supervision of a certified medical dosimetrist or medical physicist, along with 24 CE credits approved by the MDCB during the clinical experience.
