Job Overview

The City of Mount Airy is on the lookout for a dedicated Urban Planning Manager to enhance our Planning Department. This role involves executing advanced planning tasks for the municipality, focusing on both current and long-range projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate a variety of planning initiatives aimed at the growth and revitalization of the City.
  • Conduct comprehensive studies related to land use, transportation, and community development.
  • Review and ensure compliance of site and subdivision plans with municipal codes.
  • Serve as the local permit officer, providing guidance to developers and evaluating permit requests.
  • Maintain and analyze planning databases to support decision-making processes.
  • Draft and develop ordinances, policies, and planning documents as necessary.
  • Deliver presentations to various stakeholders, including city officials and community groups, on planning initiatives.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant applications and manage awarded grants.
  • Act as a liaison with the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and City Council.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding planning and zoning regulations.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning, public administration, or a related field, with a Master’s degree preferred. A minimum of 2-4 years of professional planning experience in a municipal or county setting is required.

Special Requirements

  • Valid driver's license.
  • AICP membership is preferred.
  • Completion of relevant NIMS coursework within one year is preferred.
  • Certifications in Planning, Zoning, Permitting, or Flood Management are advantageous.
