Job Title: Youth Employment Program Trainee

Department: Employment & Training Services Department (ETSD)

Reports To: Youth Case Manager

Supervises: None

Job Type: Part-time, Temporary

Program Purpose:

The Youth Employment Program (YEP) offers a 10-12 week internship aimed at providing practical work experience while applying relevant skills and knowledge in specific areas of interest. The YEP Trainee will participate in hands-on activities that introduce them to diverse career opportunities. Responsibilities include supporting designated staff at various worksites and learning to perform a range of tasks based on their assigned role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with community conservation initiatives.
  • Support operations at a local animal shelter.
  • Participate in cultural camps within the community.
  • Contribute to the local recycling center.
  • Engage in programs for Elders in the community.
  • Perform basic filing and retrieval tasks, including updating logs and archiving files.
  • Organize correspondences, invoices, receipts, and other records systematically.
  • Evaluate materials for proper classification and filing.
  • Make copies and scans, and manage electronic document filing.
  • Troubleshoot and set up office equipment such as computers and printers.
  • Engage in a goal-setting process to establish learning objectives.
  • Input data into assigned documents as needed.
  • Conduct general grounds maintenance as assigned.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of facilities.
  • Screen clients by asking basic health-related questions.
  • Perform basic food preparation tasks.
  • Engage in basic construction tasks and maintain cleanliness at worksites.
  • Support various worksites in facilitating activities for children.
  • Demonstrate initiative and effective communication skills.
  • Work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Learn and apply basic math and language skills relevant to the role.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with policies and regulations.
  • Complete all related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor conditions.
  • Capacity to lift or push up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, and twist as required.
  • Ability to reach above and below shoulder level.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and use a foot stool as necessary.
  • Occasional kneeling, crawling, and bending may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 24 at the time of application.
  • Eligibility for Alaska Native/American Indian applicants is required.
