Under the supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Assistant, or Senior Equipment Operator, the incumbent is responsible for operating a diverse range of light-to-medium sized machinery utilized in the construction, upkeep, and restoration of municipal roadways.About the Role:
The Asphalt Maintenance Program is dedicated to the repair and upkeep of asphalt surfaces on the streets of Salt Lake City. This includes activities such as pothole patching, crack sealing, inlays, level patching, and integration with certain concrete repairs. Asphalt Equipment Operators respond to pothole reports throughout the year and engage in routine patching, crack sealing, and inlay work as preparation for the Streets Surface Treatment Program.
About the Team:
The Streets Team fosters a diverse and inclusive environment, comprising individuals from various backgrounds committed to enhancing economic vitality and quality of life in Salt Lake City through the maintenance of roads and related infrastructure in a safe and efficient manner.
Compensation:
Level II: $29.05/hr
Level I: $25.78/hr

Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with a crew to perform maintenance, repair, and construction tasks, including but not limited to: road surface preparation, pothole repair, dig-outs, asphalt tie-ins, skin and deep patching, crack sealing, grading, fog sealing, slurry sealing, chip sealing, planning, and overlay.
- Operate a full range of light-to-medium complexity construction equipment necessary for various asphalt applications under general supervision.
- Transport signs and barricade equipment to and from job sites, ensuring compliance with State and City traffic control regulations.
- Notify local residents and businesses of upcoming construction schedules and provide information regarding traffic rerouting and vehicle relocation.
- Load, transport, and unload equipment, tools, asphalt, aggregate, and related materials.
- May provide training to seasonal and hourly staff.
- Evaluate and document the operating condition of assigned vehicles, performing routine maintenance and minor repairs as needed.
- Participate in snow removal duties as assigned.
- Complete routine forms, including equipment logbooks, check sheets, and repair tickets.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Level II:
- Two years of relevant work experience in equipment operation within general labor, construction, or a related field, or successful completion of the division's Asphalt Equipment Operator training program plus six months of experience.
- Knowledge of standard procedures and materials used in asphalt maintenance and construction.
- Ability to perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment and detect the need for minor repairs.
- Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Tanker endorsement or a Class B CDL with the ability to obtain a Class A within three months of starting.
- Possession of Flagger Certification or the ability to obtain it within one month of hire.
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to operate electronic input devices.
Level I:
- Zero to one year of paid work experience in general labor, construction, or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of maintenance equipment operation and the ability to learn minor repairs.
- Possession of a valid state driver's license or Utah driving privilege card, with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with a Tanker endorsement within six months of hire.
- Possession of Flagger Certification (or the ability to obtain one) within one month of hire.
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to work well with coworkers and communicate effectively with the public.
Working Conditions:
- Moderate-to-heavy physical activity, requiring the ability to push, pull, or lift medium-heavy weights (31 to 75 lbs.).
- Exposure to various environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, and grease.
- Potential hazards due to exposure to heated asphalt and petroleum-based materials.
- Unconventional working hours and availability for 24-hour call as specified in the City snow removal program or emergency operations.
- May be assigned to different areas within the Streets Division based on operational needs.
