The CSPO is tasked with the critical mission of identifying, detecting, safeguarding, responding to, and recovering from cyber security incidents and threats.

We are in search of a professional who will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the security protocols essential for safeguarding our organization are effectively communicated, implemented, and maintained.

This position will involve collaboration with various departments across the Laboratory to pinpoint security vulnerabilities and deficiencies in system or control design, offering recommendations for remediation or mitigation strategies.

The successful candidate will also take ownership of the enhancement and management of various security tools utilized by the cyber security team.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the development, enhancement, and management of designated security tools, platforms, or capabilities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of cyber security measures employed by systems.
  • Provide guidelines for the implementation of secure systems.
  • Develop tailored cyber security plans, countermeasures, and risk mitigation strategies for vulnerabilities, systems, and applications, recommending necessary security modifications.
  • Assess threats and vulnerabilities of computer systems to formulate a comprehensive security risk profile.
  • Identify the protection requirements (i.e., security controls) for information systems and networks, documenting them appropriately.
  • Review security architectures and designs to evaluate their adequacy in meeting security requirements.
  • Contribute to security requirements to be included in statements of work and other relevant documents.
  • Conduct security architectural reviews and assist in integrating security features into products and platforms.
  • Engage in industry research on emerging security protocols and methodologies, promoting security awareness at all organizational levels.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

To fulfill the essential functions of this role, candidates must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is necessary to comply with federal regulations and contracts, and must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q or L clearance.

Required knowledge includes:

  • Modern security engineering concepts and security-by-design principles, including cyber security and privacy principles, cyber threats and vulnerabilities, and security architecture.
  • Networking concepts and operating system administration.
  • System administration, network, and operating system hardening techniques.
  • Data collection and correlation from diverse resources.
  • Conducting vulnerability scans and identifying system vulnerabilities.
  • Designing countermeasures for identified security risks.
  • Translating operational requirements into security control needs.
  • Evaluating the adequacy of security designs across various conditions or environments.

Experience in assessing security controls based on cyber security principles (e.g., CIS CSC, NIST CSF, NIST SP 800-53, CMMC) is essential, along with:

  • Building zero-trust architecture (ZTA).
  • Engaging in red team/penetration-test processes and blue team defensive applications.
  • Collaborating effectively with diverse teams.

Strong communication skills across various methods and audiences are necessary, as well as the ability to work collaboratively and facilitate discussions among small groups of professionals.

  • Experience supporting security for scientific, research, or academic institutions.
  • Real-world experience in major cloud environments (e.g., AWS or Microsoft Azure).
  • Project management experience and knowledge of Agile project-management best practices.
  • Familiarity with the NIST Cyber Security Framework.
  • Experience with organizational cyber security tools and capabilities (e.g., Axonius, Splunk, CrowdStrike, etc.).

Certifications: A+, Network+, Security+, CySA+, and/or specific industry certifications (e.g., AWS, Cisco, Azure, etc.) are preferred.

This position is classified under the Professional Technical (PT) job family, specifically within the Computing Security 3 job profile, and is a full-time regular position.
