Job Summary:
The Department of Biological Sciences at Dartmouth College is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Laboratory Instructor to join our team. As a Laboratory Instructor, you will play a key role in the development and implementation of laboratory learning exercises, coordination and supervision of laboratory sections, and mentorship of graduate teaching assistants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching Lab Support:
- Prepare and aliquot experiment solutions, media, and reagents.
- Prepare instructional materials for laboratory course work.
- Coordinate and execute laboratory training sessions for graduate teaching assistants focusing on scientific and pedagogical methods.
- Ensure the success of laboratory sessions throughout the term.
- Mitigate any difficulties that arise throughout the course, either independently or in collaboration with course faculty.
- Troubleshoot and solve problems extemporaneously, from scientific protocols to interpersonal issues.
- Teaching Lab Design:
- Propose, research, and develop new laboratory exercises to accommodate changing curricular needs independently and in collaboration with faculty.
- Write and update lab manuals and laboratory assignments independently and in collaboration with faculty.
- Modify existing laboratory experiments as needed.
- Graduate Student Support and Instruction:
- Serve as the primary contact and support for graduate student teaching assistants. This requires proficiency with biological concepts in cell biology, genetics, physiology, molecular biology, and microbiology.
- Provide experiential training in pedagogical methods.
- Ensure that graduate student teaching assistants meet expectations.
- Provide detailed evaluations of graduate teaching assistants' performance.
- Laboratory Equipment and Supplies:
- Order and maintain teaching laboratory equipment/supplies.
- Ensure that labs remain clean and organized.
- Contact Environmental Health and Safety for timely disposal of lab waste.
- Course Administrative Tasks:
- Maintain student records, including laboratory attendance, exams, assignments, grades, etc.
- Manage student lab section assignment at the beginning of each term and student attendance throughout the term.
- Disassemble and scan exams for grading. Supervise exam and lab assignment grading. Maintain records of all student grades.
- Coordinate course calendar (for all lab and grading-related meetings).
- Manage laboratory feedback and evaluations.
- Utilize online learning management systems such as Canvas and Gradescope.
- Organize occasional events for undergraduate and graduate students.
- Employee Supervision:
- Supervise and evaluate graduate teaching assistants independently and in collaboration with faculty. Train students in best practices of presentations, grading, student interactions, and teaching.
- Hire and supervise undergraduate teaching assistants and graduate student graders.
- Work Schedule:
- This is a 12-month position.
- Some lab sections are scheduled in late afternoons and evenings.
- Some weekend hours may be required.
- Vacation time must be coordinated with the academic calendar and course responsibilities.
