Position Overview:

The Assistant Vice President of Reliability Engineering is responsible for overseeing the dependability of IT Services within the Group Benefits IT Portfolio at The Hartford. This role entails leading a dedicated team of Reliability Engineers focused on enhancing reliability, resilience, and efficiency across the operational domain.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive the establishment and adherence to top-tier software engineering standards and design methodologies, ensuring the effective collection of critical metrics related to technology health, availability, performance, and quality.
  • Collaborate closely with architecture and software engineering leadership to define the technical strategy for the organization, considering its cross-functional implications and integration across various departments.
  • Manage HR responsibilities for Reliability Engineers and other relevant roles within the Reliability Engineering function.
  • Implement DevSecOps practices to enhance security and operational efficiency.

Operational Solutions:

Design and implement effective tools, alerts, and response strategies to identify and mitigate reliability risks, utilizing automation to support proactive problem prevention and resolution.

Enhance delivery processes by engineering solutions that improve delivery speed while maintaining compliance with technology standards for sustained reliability.

Continuously develop preventative controls and increase automation and self-healing capabilities to improve cost efficiency.

Engineering Responsibilities:

Lead the transition of applications to open-source platforms and cloud technologies, ensuring agility and platform efficiency.

Streamline technical designs to ensure operational effectiveness without adding unnecessary complexity.

Promote practices that foster self-service capabilities across platforms, infrastructure, and security, while critically evaluating and optimizing data systems for improved reliability and scalability.

Operational Excellence:

Ensure the SRE teams can independently manage high-impact incidents, minimizing service restoration time and business impact.

Collaborate with infrastructure product teams to develop intelligent incident routing and automated service restoration processes.

Proactively implement measures to prevent significant incidents and maintain continuity of business functions.

Qualifications:

A degree in Computer Science or a related field, coupled with a minimum of 15 years of experience in IT systems analysis, design, application development, and technology leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

Over 10 years of experience in a Site Reliability Engineering or Multi-Stack/Data Engineering Manager role, along with relevant certifications in cloud solutions and DevOps methodologies.

Compensation:

The annualized base pay range for this position is competitive and based on market analysis, with additional rewards that may include bonuses and long-term incentives.
