The role of the Physical Therapist Assistant involves providing essential technical support to licensed physical therapists in a clinical setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administers physical therapy interventions as per the treatment plan established by the licensed physical therapist, which may encompass therapeutic exercises, traction, massage, application of heat and cold, hydrotherapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and functional training.
- Conducts assessments for the physical therapist's review, including goniometry, muscle testing, and vital signs monitoring.
- Assists the physical therapist during evaluations and intricate procedures.
- Manages patient scheduling, maintains treatment documentation, and processes billing.
- Facilitates communication between the physical therapist and other healthcare professionals regarding patient care.
- Performs additional tasks as assigned.
Supervision Structure
Oversight:
Receives direct supervision from the licensed Physical Therapist responsible for patient care, along with clinical oversight from the Supervisor of Physical Therapy and general supervision from the Direct and Associate Director of Rehabilitation Services.
Leadership:
Responsible for guiding assigned staff.
Qualifications
Educational Background:
Associate's degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Program recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association.
Experience:
No prior experience required; however, one year of experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant in an acute care environment, particularly in oncology, is preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
Must possess a current license as a Physical Therapist Assistant or a license to practice physical therapy in Texas, issued by the Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is also required.
