Fitter Job Description

Huntington Ingalls Industries is seeking an experienced Fitter to join our team at Newport News Shipbuilding. As a Fitter, you will be responsible for reading, interpreting, and executing drawings and procedures, as well as measuring, cutting, grinding, fitting, aligning, and tack welding parts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Read and interpret drawings and procedures
  • Measure, cut, grind, fit, align, and tack weld parts
  • Build in-place all interior structures, hatches, doors, bulkheads, etc.
  • Climb and work in high areas or crawl and work in cramped confined spaces
  • Perform tasks in various working conditions
Requirements:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at extreme heights
  • Must be able to work in small, tight, or confined spaces
  • Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more
  • Must be able to work while repeatedly reaching overhead
  • Must be able to work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to work in areas with radiation
  • Must be able to work assigned shift as production needs
  • Must be able to take and pass a Physical Agility Test
Preferred Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Preferred candidate to have 1 or more years of experience
  • Prior experience on VCS and/or CLB programs is strongly preferred
