Job Description / Essential ElementsSecondary Teacher - Art

Brief Description of Position

As part of a secondary teaching assignment, the successful candidate will teach 3 or more classes in the field of art to pupils in grades 9-12, and assist in other programs as assigned or stated in the faculty guide.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and/or three-dimensional art to secondary pupils, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Provide instruction by which pupils develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations, and ability to make qualitative judgments about creativity and craftsmanship.
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standard and/or teacher-prepared instructional aids.
  • Develop instructional plans and organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities throughout the school year.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive studio environment.
  • Instruct pupils in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
  • Evaluate each pupil's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports.
  • Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit pupil's work for the school and the community.
  • May sponsor exhibits from outside sources.
  • Participate in in-service education activities provided by the district and continue professional growth.
Other Duties
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on the individual pupil's progress as determined by the teacher and faculty guide.
  • Identify pupils needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Perform basic attendance accounting and business services as required.
  • Share in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees.
  • May plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals.
Qualifications
  • Credential: General Secondary, Special Secondary/Art, Standard Secondary (issued on a partial fulfillment basis).
  • Education: Bachelor's degree with major or minor in art, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
  • Experience: Practice teaching (6 semester hours or 120 clock hours) or two years of full-time teaching experience at least half in art education.
  • Personal Qualities: Appearance, grooming, and personality that establish a desirable example for pupils. Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teachers. Demonstrated competence in one or more of the major fields of art.
