Position Overview

The role involves servicing and maintaining locomotives, transporting materials between operational and storage areas, and executing various support and cleanup tasks within locomotive and car repair zones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Refueling locomotives
  • Monitoring and replenishing oil levels in locomotives
  • Cleaning locomotive cabs, including restroom facilities
  • Applying sand to locomotives
  • Operating forklifts and other machinery
  • Driving various vehicles; may require obtaining a CDL for operating the Locomotive Service truck
  • May need to operate locomotives within designated shop limits
  • Washing locomotives
  • Maintaining cleanliness and order in related railroad facilities
  • Completing additional tasks as necessary to ensure the safe and effective operation of locomotives

Job Requirements

  • This position is safety-sensitive, requiring constant alertness and focus while on duty. Safety-sensitive tasks may include:
    • Regularly working around heavy, moving, potentially hazardous locomotive engines.
    • Frequently climbing on and off locomotives in various weather conditions.
    • Operating and maneuvering locomotive engines (some movements may be subject to Hours-of-Service regulations).
  • Adhering to safety protocols to prevent workplace accidents and injuries.
  • Wearing protective gear such as hard hats, hearing protection, and safety-toe boots.
  • Completing annual training and passing safety regulations examinations.
  • Passing all required assessments and background checks.
  • Undergoing a post-offer medical examination, including a drug screening.
  • This role is governed by union regulations, and membership is mandatory.

  • Ability to obtain a Locomotive Service Engineer license through company-sponsored training

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Veterans and transitioning service members are encouraged to apply. Military roles that often transition well to this position include: 2T3X1, AE, AMT, 2141, 88U.

Training
New Mechanical Laborers will participate in a one-week Mechanical Safety Orientation during their initial week of employment. The company will cover travel expenses and lodging as required by union agreements.

Compensation

  • 1st year rate: $ % of full rate
  • 2nd year rate: $ % of full rate

Work Environment

Work hours will include shifts across all three shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift assignments are based on seniority. The work environment includes both shop and outdoor settings.
