Position Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Senior Respiratory Care Leader plays a pivotal role in overseeing operations for a designated shift or area, executing leadership duties that encompass specialized projects and responsibilities as an integral part of their regular functions. In addition to these leadership tasks, this role also encompasses responsibilities at a Senior Respiratory Care Practitioner level, which includes performing advanced procedures. This position acts as the primary liaison among management, staff, and physicians for routine inquiries, ensuring effective resolution of questions and issues for Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCPs) and support personnel, thereby enhancing patient care and maintaining adherence to practice standards for optimal safety, quality outcomes, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Development
  • Facilitates work schedules, assigns tasks, and reviews time records for accuracy.
  • Conducts quality assurance evaluations of team performance and implements quality improvement initiatives.
  • Mentors and trains staff, providing constructive feedback on performance and developmental needs.
  • Participates in the development of team skills and performance metrics.
  • Collects, analyzes, and reports data on departmental performance.
Patient Care and Service Excellence
  • Utilizes advanced clinical and critical thinking skills in complex patient care scenarios.
  • Acts as a liaison among team members, management, and physicians to resolve routine matters.
  • Proactively identifies needs for adjustments to ensure optimal patient care and experience.
  • Drives service enhancements to improve patient satisfaction scores.
Quality and Safety Assurance
  • Conducts audits on equipment, processes, and team member performance.
  • Documents and evaluates procedures and outcomes, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Assists in the development of policies and ensures compliance with accreditation standards.
Financial Accountability
  • Ensures accurate documentation of patient procedures and timely charge entry.
  • Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively manages time to minimize overtime.
Professional Growth and Innovation
  • Leads departmental projects and participates in committees to achieve organizational goals.
  • Seeks continuous learning opportunities to enhance skills and leadership capabilities.

Qualifications

Education
  • Graduation from an accredited educational program recognized by the relevant credentialing body.
Experience
  • A minimum of four years as a Respiratory Care Practitioner, with two years in critical care settings preferred.
Licenses and Certifications

Required
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification.
  • State licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Additional certifications within six months of hire, as specified.
Preferred
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates competencies necessary for safe job performance.
  • Proficient in English communication, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
