Overview

The Maintenance Operations Leader is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of the Maintenance Department. This role involves close collaboration with site Managers and Supervisors. The individual will manage resources during critical situations such as electrical failures, pipeline breaks, and adverse weather conditions. Reporting directly to the Senior Plant Manager, this position supervises up to 25 team members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Administration and Environmental Protection Agency standards through meticulous record-keeping.
  • Oversee the preventive maintenance program for all production machinery, mobile equipment, and facilities.
  • Optimize the utilization of maintenance resources to enhance cost efficiency and equipment reliability.
  • Foster a culture of safety, environmental responsibility, and quality service among all personnel.
  • Manage external contractors to effectively supplement internal resources.
  • Implement maintenance systems and controls to efficiently manage resources and assess maintenance performance.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Project Manager, General Manager, Operations Manager, and Engineering teams on construction and equipment upgrade initiatives.
  • Identify and arrange training programs to enhance the skills and capabilities of all assigned personnel.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with all staff members.
  • Maintain a presence in the plant for a minimum of five days per week and be available for on-call duties as necessary.
  • Develop work schedules to maximize the effective use of manpower, machinery, and materials, assigning tasks to maintenance staff.
  • Assist teams in problem-solving, project justification, and implementation.
  • Establish performance expectations for assigned personnel, monitoring outcomes and taking corrective actions as needed.
  • Regularly assess the operation of assigned equipment, recommending improvements or new acquisitions as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of machine performance and history.
  • Enhance equipment reliability through operational adjustments and design enhancements.
  • Manage spare parts inventory effectively.
  • Understand and assist in hazardous waste management protocols.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging team members to propose operational enhancements and keeping them informed of progress.
  • Administer company policies consistently and fairly, collaborating with Human Resources on personnel matters.
  • Ensure cleanliness and safety in the work environment, promptly reporting and investigating incidents.
  • Train new employees on departmental and company procedures, including safety protocols.
  • Contribute to achieving departmental and organizational goals.
  • Uphold the Valmont Safety Mission by actively participating in safety training and enforcing safety regulations through regular meetings.

Additional Information

  • Assess resource needs, training requirements, and internal control measures aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Provide recommendations on controls and monitor their implementation, reporting to senior management on internal control operations.
  • Maintain professional competencies and evaluate staffing levels and capabilities within the functional area.
  • Accountable to senior management for internal control responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's or Technical Degree in Industrial Maintenance or a related field, with a minimum of four years of relevant experience.
  • At least two years of experience in a leadership position.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
  • Basic engineering knowledge and ability to interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to engage with all organizational levels.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Project or similar).
  • Capable of exercising independent judgment and discretion with minimal supervision.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing and facility equipment operations.
  • Familiarity with OSHA standards for General Industry.
  • Awareness of facility security issues and operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Maintenance Mechanics, Industrial Systems Technology, Maintenance Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to manage job expenditure budgets and ensure optimal use of equipment, facilities, and materials.
  • Capacity to evaluate costs against potential benefits.
  • Previous supervisory experience in manufacturing or logistics environments.
  • Practical experience in Lean Manufacturing principles.
