Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is in search of a skilled Civil Engineer to take on the role of Senior Roadway Design Engineer within the Culpeper district. The selected candidate will leverage their engineering acumen to address project challenges, contribute to the development and execution of engineering initiatives, and collaborate with local authorities, consultants, community members, and federal agencies on transportation-related projects and programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, review, manage, and produce right-of-way and construction roadway plans for diverse transportation projects utilizing advanced engineering and design software.
  • Act as project manager, preparing quantities and estimates, maintaining schedules, overseeing project activities, and presenting engineering data to various stakeholders.
  • Provide expert guidance on roadway design matters from initial engineering phases through to construction, serving as the responsible charge engineer.

Core Qualifications

  • Proven experience in roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications, and materials.
  • Ability to interpret plans, contracts, specifications, and regulations effectively.
  • In-depth knowledge of roadway safety principles that influence standards and specialized designs.
  • Experience applying civil engineering principles related to roadway design and technical design knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage positively with colleagues, citizens, and government officials.
  • Capability to mentor and train team members.
  • Proficiency in utilizing computers and software applications, including engineering and design tools.
  • Strong organizational skills to plan and schedule work, managing multiple concurrent assignments.
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A valid Professional Engineer's license (PE) is mandatory.

Additional Considerations

  • Certification as a Project Management Professional is advantageous.
  • Progressively responsible experience in roadway design and project management, including responsible charge engineering, is preferred.
