Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as the Deputy Director of Animal Care Operations in our Animal Services Department. This is a critical leadership role that requires a strong background in animal sheltering, animal control, and management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily activities of the Pet Resource Center and Animal Services operations, ensuring the care and safety of animals in custody.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to improve animal welfare and shelter operations.
  • Oversee the recruitment, selection, and training of staff members, as well as the management of personnel.
  • Research and analyze programs and services to identify areas for improvement and develop recommendations.
  • Provide input and assistance in developing the Master Plan and short-range plans to ensure progress.
  • Assist in developing annual departmental objectives and short- and long-term goals.
  • Exercise initiative and independent judgment in dealing with sensitive animal-related issues.
  • Direct the operations and activities of the Pet Resource Center, ensuring the care of animals and effective management of staff.
  • Oversee the direction of field activities of the Animal Services Department, including the enforcement of County ordinances relating to animal control.
  • Provide customer service to the public, educate staff and the public on humane treatment of animals, and interact with the community to promote positive animal welfare issues.
  • Develop, present, and defend departmental budget requirements, oversee and approve expenditures, and prepare financial forms and reports.
  • Perform daily inspections of the shelter to ensure work is accomplished, animals are cared for, and the facility is sanitary.
  • Head up community outreach processes and programs of the shelter's services, develop and maintain contact with community groups and professional organizations, and conduct facility tours.
  • Develop and implement operating processes and procedures, short- and long-term goals for the department.
  • Prepare reports and other documentation for presentation before executive management, groups, or BOC meetings.
  • Ensure the coordination between divisions relating to impounded and quarantined animals, ensuring proper care and safety measures are taken and animals are held in accordance with state requirements and court-ordered conditions.
  • Assist with preparing, presenting, and maintaining mutual aid agreements with appropriate governmental agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO).
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings, maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of animal sheltering, and incorporate new developments as appropriate into department programs.
  • Engage multiple local community interest groups to support the various activities of the animal shelter, including animal adoptions, donation drives, and special projects.
  • Participate in public speaking engagements and public relations, making speeches to community organizations regarding animal shelters and related programs.
  • Maintain numerous files, records, and statistics, as well as other departmental activities.
  • Conduct staff meetings, attend classes, meetings, conferences, and workshops related to work, and maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Lead assigned divisions in ensuring compliance with all safety and health requirements, develop safety policies essential to the department, and ensure all departmental employees are trained on safety policies prior to commencing duties.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a closely related field, supplemented by six years of previous experience and/or training involving animal sheltering, animal control, with a minimum of four years of progressively responsible management experience.
  • Valid Georgia driver's license and Euthanasia Technician Certification.
  • One of the following certifications upon hire: Animal Welfare Administrator, Animal Shelter Manager.
  • Executive Management Certificate within twelve months of employment.
