Job Summary

We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician Assistant to join our team at Johns Hopkins University. As an Ophthalmic Technician Assistant, you will assist the Ophthalmologist with patient care by performing ophthalmic testing and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain and record patient history, including chief complaint, past ocular history, family history, systemic illnesses, medications, allergies, and social history.
  • Measure visual acuity, perform pinhole testing, and record contrast sensitivity.
  • Perform and record Ishihara or HRR color vision testing, exophthalmometry, Amsler grid, and Schirmer testing.
  • Evaluate pupillary reactions and estimate anterior chamber depth.
  • Operate common ophthalmic equipment, including IOL Master, Orb-scan, bright field acuity testing, potential acuity meter, autorefractor, corneal pachymetry, Humphrey visual field, Goldmann visual field, OCT, and HRT.
  • Apply ocular dressings and shields, follow divisional protocols for eye drop instillation, and label newly opened bottles with expiration dates.
  • Assist physically or visually disabled patients and adhere to regulations regarding drug samples and drug sample logs.
  • Perform basic tonometry, including Goldmann applanation tonometry, Tono-pen tonometry, and Eye Care tonometry.
  • Understand the principles of scleral rigidity and the factors that alter intraocular pressure.
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance on all ophthalmic equipment and stock examination rooms in assigned areas.
  • Maintain current CPR certification and understand basic ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases, and ocular emergencies.
  • Understand and practice the fundamentals of microbial control and complete required JHMI courses, including HIPAA regulations and Conflict of Interest.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) within 18 months of start date.
  • CPR certification required.
