Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Johns Hopkins University. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Record patient history, including chief complaint, ocular history, past surgeries, medical conditions, medications, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk, and family history.
  • Perform visual field testing, including Amsler Grid and Humphrey visual field testing.
  • Measure and record distance and near visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and other relevant metrics.
  • Assist with in-office procedures, including instilling eye drops, measuring and recording visual acuity, and performing OCTs.
  • Compile and enter data for clinical studies and participate in other clinical research projects.
  • Teach patients how to insert and remove contact lenses correctly and provide proper handling techniques.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repair of clinical equipment.
  • Responsible for exam room supply maintenance, ensuring medication expiration dates are current, and maintaining and sterilizing instruments.
  • Disinfect and maintain examination rooms, understanding and practicing the fundamentals of microbial control.
  • Manage and order medications for intravitreal injections and assist with tracking and processing of forms requests.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician. Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
  • CPR certification required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a clinical office setting as an Ophthalmic Technician.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for 50% of the time, move about to escort patients to exam rooms and different departments, and stock rooms. The person in this position frequently communicates with patients and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

This position is classified as Non-Exempt and is located on the School of Medicine Campus. The starting salary range is $19.75 - $35.35 HRLY ($22.67-$33.35 targeted; commensurate with experience).
